EWB-UMBC plans to head out to Kenya again for their implementation trip in January of 2014!
During our July trip to Kenya, a hydrogeological survey was completed by Melchizidek Okello (a local Kenyan) to find the aquifers that would be able to supply clean water for years and years to come. The implementation of this bore hole will supply clean water to hundreds of people in the local area!
Students at UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) and team leaders will not only help with the construction of this well after the hole has been drilled, but also taking great care to set up a contract with a group of people who will take maintenance fees on a regular basis. Research has shown that this is a vital part of the project; however, this particular part takes a bit of time and relationship building to be secured.
At this point, we’re not sure if we can work on more projects together in Kenya, but I think the idea is planted already. Many times this area of Kenya can be seen as a blank canvas for those who love to implement community projects.
